Gay, Childless Man Hounded For Child Support

Mo. Resident Has Had Partner For 12 Years

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The state of Missouri tried to garnish Timothy L. Stewart's wages for unpaid child support. But Stewart has never had any children. In fact, he has been in a 12-year relationship with another man.

It is a case of mistaken identity, but it's the second time in as many years that someone has tried to make Stewart pay child support, and he is concerned that his credit rating is going to suffer.

Stewart said he tried to convince someone with the state Division of Child Support Enforcement that they had the wrong guy, but the person he spoke with wouldn't listen.

"I explained to him I've been in a 12-year relationship with a man -- and he didn't seem fazed by that at all. He said he's heard every excuse in the book, basically," Stewart said.

Fortunately, with the help of an understanding partner and employer, Stewart was able to stop the $157.50 per month garnishment without having to pay a dime. Stewart said he would like an apology from the state, but he doesn't think he'll get one.

The long-time Kansas City resident would also like to know where the other Timothy L. Stewart is, and why he hasn't paid his child support.
