Low Sex Drive? Blame Busy Life

'Hurried Woman Syndrome' Affects Millions Of Women

CLEVELAND -- Doctors say that "hurried woman syndrome" affects 50 million to 60 million women, with symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and low sex drive.

But there are some things that can be done to avoid it.

Jennifer Fung is in constant motion. Her job at Steven Lu Insurance in Cleveland, her two daughters, her home, and her husband have her in high gear 24-7.

"I just have to keep telling myself what I'm doing is right and worth it," she said.

Fung tries to smile as she thinks about her daily duties, but many overloaded mothers, like Lernetta Cain, are always in a rush.

Cain is a bus driver whose son needs physical therapy.

"Well, I just look at the fact that I have to do it," she said. "Somebody has to do it."

But if women like Cain keep pushing too hard, doctors say that serious symptoms might follow.

"Changes in sleep, weight gain, lack of focus, lack of sexual interest" can be the results, said Dr. Meriam Rosenthal of University Hospitals.

Rosenthal outlines the symptoms of "hurried woman syndrome," a newly defined affliction affecting over-burdened women ages 25 to 55.

How do you fight the syndrome? She said you should take time for yourself and exercise.

"Take your children to yoga class," she said. "Go to the gym. Instead of eating lunch, go for a walk."

Fung has her own advice.

"You just have to let it out," she said. "Yell or whatever you need to do. You just can't keep it inside. Let somebody know. As long as somebody understands you, you won't feel so bad."

Delegating some of your responsibilities can also help prevent hurried woman syndrome.

Doctors say that by lightening your load, you can reduce the symptoms of fatigue -- many times within 12 weeks.
