Alcohol-related Marion County crash leaves 1 dead, 3 injured, officials say

Crash occurred at intersection of U.S. 441, SE 80 Street Saturday night

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – One man is dead and three more are injured after a Saturday night crash in Marion County, according to officials from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Troopers said a 1991 GMC Sierra ran a red light while traveling south on U.S. 441 and struck a 2006 Toyota Scion traveling west on Southeast 80 Street.

Officials said both the 53-year-old driver and a 47-year-old passenger of the Sierra were under the influence of alcohol. 

According to the crash report, the Sierra overturned into the shoulder of U.S. 441, while the Scion stopped in the grass median in the road. The driver of the Scion, a 46-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Sierra and passengers of each vehicle were taken to local hospitals. Officials said the driver of the Sierra suffered critical injuries and the passenger sustained serious injuries. They said the passenger of the Scion, a 46-year-old woman, suffered critical injuries.

Troopers have not released the identities of the victims in the Scion. They said criminal charges are pending.
