Police said the mother was located and taken to a nearby hospital.

“The loss of a child is always a tragedy,” the Tampa police chief said in a statement. “As our department actively investigates this incident, we want all expectant mothers to know there are resources available.”

The dead infant was taken to the medical examiner’s office, where officials will determine cause of death.

Florida has a Safe Haven Law that allows parents to anonymously hand over newborns 7 days or younger to a staff member at a hospital or a fire station.

Expectant mothers facing difficult circumstances can call the National Safe Haven Alliance Hotline at 888-510-BABY(2229) or the Florida Department of Health, Maternal & Child Health Section at 850-245-4047.
