Officials have filed federal charges against a man who was found with “Mother of Satan” explosive powder at his Volusia County home in November.

Jared E. Coburn, 37, was arrested on Nov. 13 after someone called in a tip about a homemade bomb that led officials to his home on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Deputies reported finding two jars, two vials and a baggie of triacetate Triperoxide, or TATP — an explosive powder the terrorist organization Al-Qaida dubbed the “Mother of Satan” because it’s so dangerous.

Coburn said he used YouTube to learn to make the material because of his passion for fireworks and other explosives.

"It's kind of off the scale of weird (expletive), but it's not like I think he was a terrorist or anything. He just likes blowing stuff up," a neighbor said.

When the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad removed the TATP from the home, they also found an improvised grenade, a large number of exploding targets, multiple firearms, large amounts of ammunition and items that could be portrayed as hoax destructive devices.

Coburn has now been charged with three felony counts:

  • Manufacture/distribute/use/possession of explosives -- a second degree felony
  • Make/possess/throw/project/place or discharge any destructive device or attempt to do so -- a third-degree felony
  • Make/possess/throw/project/place or discharge any destructive device or attempt to do so -- a third-degree felony
  • Officials said the charges are punishable by a maximum possible penalty of 25 years in state prison.
