Rescue Efforts End For Arrow-Pierced Bird

UPDATED: 3:42 pm EDT July 19, 2006

An injured ibis in Holly Hill, Fla., with a two-foot arrow stuck through its body will now have to fend for itself after bird rescuers called off rescue efforts, according to Local 6 News.

The rescuers said since the bird is eating, flying and showing no signs of infection, it will be left alone.

The young white ibis was first seen last week. It was shot with a dull arrow, which appeared to have missed vital organs and muscles but remained lodged in the bird.

Bird rescue teams and neighbors have repeatedly spotted the bird but have not been able to capture it.

"I have captured hundreds of birds," said Bob Hunt, a volunteer with the Bird Rescue Center in New Smyrna Beach. "You would think this would be one of the easier ones."

Local 6 News reported that veterinarians monitoring the bird said it appeared the arrow is working its way out of the ibis.

However, rescuers still wanted to capture it and give the bird medical attention.

People involved in the search said if the ibis appeared to be in distress, rescuers will return to the area and try again to capture the bird.
