SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- Authorities in Sumter County used DNA from cigarette butts to track down a suspected killer 19 years after the crime was committed, according to Local 6 News.

Carl E. Dausch faces first-degree murder charges for allegedly tying up a man, kicking him to death and then tossing his body on the side of the road in 1987.

Investigators said 19 years later, cigarette butts taken from the crime scene and preserved positively matched Dausch's DNA.

"As for the suspect, he had no reason to even know him, being from Indiana," Sumter County Sheriff Bill Farmer said. "The name never came up whatsoever."

"People should take hope that their cases are not just sitting on a shelve gathering dust," Sumter sheriff's Capt. Gary Brannen said.

Dausch is already behind bars in Indiana serving a 60-year sentence for a number of violent crimes.

He will be extradited back to Central Florida in the next 60 days, Local 6 News learned.
