ORLANDO, Fla. -- Plots at Orlando's historic Greenwood Cemetery are selling faster than downtown condominiums after technology discovered unused land could be used for thousands of new spaces, according to a Local 6 News report.Family-sized plots at the city-owned Greenwood Cemetery have been scarce over the last few years because of a lack of land. People seeking a final resting place together usually found only single plots. However, a high-tech digital survey at the 125-year-old graveyard discovered new spaces.
"We digitized all the records of the cemetery and we had a survey done of the cemetery and what it shows us is areas that are not being utilized," cemetery sexton Don Price said. The survey found pockets of unused land at the outer edges of the cemetery property and between headstones."Now, with these new sections we are opening, families are reserving ten spots, they are reserving six spots," Price said.Plots are selling faster than downtown condominiums, Local 6 News reported."I very much wanted for my family to be buried here in the place we all grew up," resident Danny Holecheck said. "This is in my neighborhood and this is where I really wanted to be buried. Things really worked out."Greenwood is one of two cemeteries in Orlando.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
