Two teens in Volusia County are accused of beating a homeless man to death with sticks because they were bored and wanted something to do, according to police.

Investigators said a group of teens reported finding the body of a 53-year-old man in some woods behind a car wash near North Nova Avenue Saturday.

After questioning, police charged Jeffery Spurgeon, 18, and Christopher Scamahorn, 14, with first-degree murder, Local 6 News reported.

Detectives said the teens went back to the wooded area three different times to beat the man with fists and sticks until the man died, according to the report.

"Police say their motive was boredom," Local 6 News reporter Deborah Garcia said.

"I don't know what happened or what has been done, but this is not him," suspect's father Jeffery Spurgeon Sr. said. "I think it was more of a I want to look big in front of my friends kind of thing."

Spurgeon said his son and Scamahorn were not acting alone in the beating death.

Scamahorn is being held at the juvenile detention center and Spurgeon remains at the Volusia County Jail.
