PALM BAY -- Palm Bay police officers confiscated 40 portable generators from a man this weekend suspected of price gouging, according to a report.

An officer from the Palm Bay Police Department noticed a truck and trailer full of generators drive past nearly 200 customers waiting in line for generators at the Home Depot on Malabar Road, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Police said the man then parked his vehicle in the Publix parking lot next door and set up shop, selling generators to customers.

Police sent an undercover officer to the scene where he bought one of the portable generators for $600, Florida Today reported. The machines have a retail price of approximately $299, according to police officials.

The seller was taken into custody, questioned and released.

Charges are pending an investigation, which is under way to determine the ownership of the generators.
