Nikolai Novikov took about 40 minutes to go down 32 flights of marble-plated stairs in a historic Moscow hotel.

It's not the first time that the former circus performer has experimented with the bizarre side of extreme sports. In 1996 he gave sport massages to dozens of people for a period of 24-hours non-stop.

Novikov has also balanced on chairs on the edge of tall buildings.

A team of doctors followed him down each flight of stairs during the record-breaking effort.

In preparation for the attempt, Novikov fasted so that his stomach wouldn't also turn upside down.

Novikov, who has been handstanding since he was four years old, fell down a few times along the way but escaped without serious injury.

Now, he says he wants to try the Eiffel Tower.
