Semi Dangles Off Wash. Bridge

Gusting Winds Prevented Effort To Clear Tractor-Trailer

A semi-truck hung precariously on a guardrail on the Deception Pass Bridge for hours Friday and was at risk of tumbling into the water 185 feet below before crews pulled it upright, according to a report.

The tractor-trailer was reportedly driving on Highway 20 Friday when it began swaying. The vehicle's cab fell on its driver side and slid atop a guardrail. A white truck then hit it.

Fears that high winds of up to 55 mph could blow the semi into the water delayed efforts to upright the vehicle for hours, according to KIRO-TV.

The truck driver was not injured, but the driver of the white truck involved in the crash was taken to Whidbey General Hospital to be with minor injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer told KIRO-TV that all he saw when the truck tipped onto the guardrail was "a lot of water."

State Route 20 was closed in both directions while the truck was hanging. The road was reopened after the truck was removed.
