Sergeant Booked Into Jail

A Central Florida police sergeant has been arrested on suspicion of throwing a female to the ground at a party, pulling her pants down and spanking her with a belt, Local 6 reported.

Ocoee police Sgt. Tom Maroney was arrested Thursday afternoon on charges of attempted sexual battery, false imprisonment and battery. Maroney received a written warning from the Ocoee Police Department in a similar incident with an intern in 2004.

The latest alleged victim said she met Maroney at a party Monday night and did not know that he was a police officer. Sources told Local 6 News that a fellow police officer hosted the party.

The victim told authorities early Tuesday morning that Maroney sexually battered her by pulling off her pants and spanking her with a belt.

"It's an incident that needs to be investigated and dealt with in a way that's appropriate," Ocoee Mayor Scott Vandergrift said. "Officer Maroney has been, on the surface, a pretty good policeman. I wasn't aware of the other thing, and we all have lapses in judgement."

Maroney, who has been placed on paid administrative leave, was taken to the Orange County Jail.

In 2004, an intern with the Ocoee Police Department accused Maroney of sexual harassment. He admitted to giving the underage intern alcohol at his home, according to an internal affairs file.

The intern said Maroney told her that he wanted to give her 21 spankings for an upcoming birthday.

Ocoee police found that Maroney violated the department's directives, and he was issued a written warning.

The Ocoee police chief was recently terminated after he was accused of borrowing prescription medication from another employee and then using it while on duty.
