DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The city of Daytona Beach may soon start recruiting panhandlers to beautify the city, paying the panhandlers with a stipend and a place to stay.City commissioners are seeking funding for the "Homeless to Work" program, which would allow panhandlers to work five days a week.Organizers said they will recruit panhandlers because they are the most likely to follow through with the six-month program.
"We put them through drug and alcohol screening, (and) we're able to house them at the Palmetto House in Daytona Beach. For six months, they're tasked to stay clean and sober, work in the downtown area, cleaning sidewalks, parks and streets," Commissioner Rick Shiver said. The program will cost the city about $2,500 per person.Shiver said the city will likely launch the program, which is modeled after a similar successful program in California, in about two months.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
