K-9 Attacks Deputy, Gets Shocked With Taser

Deputy Suffers Puncture Wounds From Bite

POSTED: 10:46 am EDT May 8, 2008

A Brevard County sheriff's deputy returrned to work Thursday morning after being bitten by a police dog during the apprehension of two burglary suspects at a business in Titusville.

Deputy Mike Hriciso on Wednesday was searching for one of the suspects who had fled from the business' rooftop air conditioner shafts to the inside of the building. Hriciso surprised a Titusville Police Department K-9 when he ran in front of the dog inside the dimly lit building, Brevard County sheriff's Lt. Mike DeMorat told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

Hriciso, who suffered two puncture wounds to his triceps, was treated at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville and released.

During the attack, Hriciso stunned the dog with his Taser gun, causing it to release him, DeMorat said. The dog was not hurt, DeMorat said.

"The dog is trained to do that," DeMorat said. "The deputy ran in front of him in dim lighting, and the dog is trained to go on instinct. The dog's handler immediately works with the dog afterward to get back into the training. You don’t want the dog to associate that he did anything wrong."

Deputies, working with the Titusville Police Department in a joint investigation, arrested Jacob Denaro, 32, and Jared Martin, 19, both of Titusville, at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, while the two attempted to steal copper from the rooftop air conditioning units at the business on Garden Street, deputies said.

The arrests were the result of a surveillance of the two men, after agents from the North Precinct General Crimes Unit received intelligence that Denaro and Martin were allegedly involved in copper thefts. Agents followed both suspects to a vacant commercial building and observed them on the roof dismantling several air conditioning units, deputies said.

Denaro and Martin were taken to the Brevard County Jail on charges of burglary, grand theft and possession of burglary tools.
