Teen In Shooting Released; Police Upset

Police said a 17-year-old placed under house arrest and tagged with an electronic monitoring device remains a threat to the public because he failed to turn over a gun used to spray bullets into a crowded park.

A Brevard County judge released Jesse Trautman, 17, from detention a little more than 12 hours after he was charged in connection with a first-degree attempted murder case, records show.

"We would rather have him in jail," Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department, told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "Now that he's out, he knows where the gun is and we believe, is still a danger to the public."

She called the electronic monitor "better than nothing."

Palm Bay police said Trautman and 15-year-old Kyle Lambert were arrested Friday night shortly after the shooting at Fred Lee Park at 895 Emerson Drive. No one was hit by the gunfire.

Lambert, the second teen, was ordered held in custody Sunday on a charge of attempted murder with a firearm. He has another arraignment hearing at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Moore Justice Center, officials said.

The shooting stemmed from an earlier fight at Palm Bay High School, police said.

Lambert's parents remain in shock at the allegations.

"He's pretty much scared out of his britches. ...I can't believe the other kid is out," said Lisa Lambert of her son, a ninth-grader. "My son has never been in any trouble before. I'm just up in the air about the whole thing. He's an excellent kid."

Lambert also questioned what evidence police have that gunshots were fired. Police have not found the weapon, thought to have been fired while up to 50 people were at the park.

Despite the claims of innocence, police point to statements from a dozen witnesses and remain adamant both teens should be jailed.

"We'll be at every one of the court hearings," Martinez said. "They're still dangerous."
