APOPKA, Fla. -- Two armed men posing as police officers burst into a Central Florida home and stole cash and cell phones from a family, according to investigators.
Detectives said the fake officers broke into the family's home on Hawthorne Avenue in Apopka and demanded the family's possessions.
The family said they believe they were targeted because some of them are illegal immigrants. They said the bandits know some of them are in Central Florida illegally and are afraid to talk to police.
"If you're an immigrant and don't know English, you're thinking, 'OK, I can trust this person because it's the police.'" a victim said. "But they are not and your life is in danger."
Investigators said the bandits were searching for drugs but the family said they don't do drugs, Local 6 reported.
One of the men at the house was pistol-whipped but not seriously injured.
The family said the getaway car was a dark-colored Dodge Intrepid or Chevrolet.
Anyone with information concerning the crime is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
