Man-O-War Stings Injure Spring Breakers

UPDATED: 6:35 am EDT April 2, 2008

Spring breakers at Cocoa Beach were warned Wednesday after several Portuguese man-o-wars caused painful stings, even hospitalizing a young girl.

Lifeguards in Cocoa Beach said rescue units responded to beaches Tuesday to treat several children stung by the man-o-wars.

Officials said a 14-year-old told rescue workers she could not walk after suffering stings to both legs.

Brevard County Fire Rescue was called but the girl was able to get up and walk a short time later.

Another victim, a 6-year-old girl, was stung at the Lori Wilson Park area of Cocoa Beach, 1300 N. A1A and rushed to Cape Canaveral Hospital.

Also, a woman on the beach said her daughter was stung when she grabbed at a man-o-war.

"She chased after a man-o-war and grabbed at it and it got her all over," parent Lisa Cocking said. "It looks like it is pretty painful but she will get over it."

Chief of EMS and BCFR spokesman Orlando Dominguez said it's not unusual for stings this time of year, with storms that churn up the oceans.

Dominguez said a good treatment for stings is meat tenderizer or meat applied to the wound, as it neutralizes the toxicity of the sting.
