Police: Fake Doctor Diagnosed, Treated Hundreds

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- A Winter Park man is accused of diagnosing and treating hundreds of Central Floridians without a license.

Dr. Sayed Amouzagar, who is lead physician at the Advanced Foot and Ankle Center, is accused of allowing his prime investor, Thomas Grillo -- also known as Wayne Finelli, to diagnose and treat patients.Acting on a tip from Local 6, The Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation sent an undercover agent to the center posing as a patient."(Finelli) identified himself as a doctor and he did what the medical profession would consider treatment on her and wanted to give her an injection. But we were able to talk our way out of it," MBI Cmdr. Paul Zambouras said. "Yes, he acted as a doctor and treated (the undercover agent) for a foot problem.""Was the other doctor, the real doctor (Amouzagar) present while this was going on?" Local 6's Mike Holfeld said."He was in the building but not in the examination room with our undercover agent," Zambouras said.A medical assistant, Audra Perrodin, said she watched the man patients knew as "Dr. James" (Finelli) assume various alter egos using an office across the street from the Winter Park Hospital as his main front, Holfeld reported."Depending on who it was, (Finelli) was office manager James Peterson or if he wanted you to think he was a doctor, he was Dr. Thomas Grillo," Perrodin said."When I asked Dr. James if he had any degrees, he said, 'I have them up the ying-yang,'" patient Janice Hymes said.Local 6 alerted Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation agents when it became evident that patients may be at risk.After a swift investigation, agents arrived at the practice Friday with arrest and search warrants."The man calling himself Dr. James is no doctor, he is an ex-convict by the name of Wayne H. Finelli and his credentials (are) cocaine possession, grand theft and credit card fraud," Holfeld said.Finelli was charged with practicing medicine without a license and Amouzagar could be stripped on his license in connection with the case, Local 6 reported.Meanwhile, officials said the state Health Department's Web site gives quick access to what they call a license lookup.
