A Sanford woman who had to have a quadruple amputation after giving birth two years ago at a Central Florida hospital suffered a legal setback on Tuesday.

Claudia Mejias contracted a flesh-eating bacteria, which led to the loss of her limbs, during the birth of her son at Orlando Regional South Seminole Hospital.

A judge ruled on Tuesday that hospital records requested by Mejia are protected by work product and attorney-client privilege.

Mejia's attorneys argued that the records are the result of an investigation that started two days before the hospital retained a lawyer to handle the case and therefore are not subject to protection -- even if the investigation was done in anticipation of a lawsuit.

Mejia's attorneys said they will likely appeal the ruling, which is separate from a pending medical malpractice lawsuit.
