The escalating dispute between Brevard Public Schools and the management company that runs Osprey and Sawgrass Charter schools comes to a head Tuesday night.
The Brevard County School Board will take a final vote on the schools' termination.
If the board ends the contract, the charters' 61 students must be placed in new schools on Wednesday, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. Last year, the sister schools served about 200 students on their Rockledge campus.
Academies of Excellence will have 14 days to appeal the decision with the state.
Superintendent Richard DiPatri recommended the school board close the charters for failure to meet generally accepted standards of fiscal management and failure to meet student performance goals, among other reasons.
On Monday, district officials tried to bolster their case by pointing to a suit filed on Friday in Brevard County Court, which alleges that Academies owes a modular company more than $225,275 in missed rental payments.
Mobile Management Corporation, the company that rented 22 portable buildings to Academies while the sister schools were in Rockledge, alleges that Academies has refused to pay the balance for months.
The schools moved to a new Melbourne campus this year with a $136,000-a-year lease agreement.
Academies could not be reached on Monday for comment on the lawsuit.
But last week, the company filed its own lawsuit against the district in an attempt to delay Tuesday's decision.
