School Bus Driver Gets Lost, Takes Elem. Students On 60-Mile Detour

Parent: Son Shaking, Crying During Trip

A group of elementary school students in Osceola County, Fla., ended up on a 60-mile detour Monday after their bus driver got lost and drove to Brevard County.

Several parents were furious after their children did not immediately return from school after being picked up at Hickory Tree Elementary and the Annex at Harmony -- located only a few miles away from the school bus stops.

The driver tried to avoid traffic and got lost, a representative from the Osceola County Public Schools said. She traveled to Melbourne after leaving her St. Cloud bus route.

Parent Tisha Budreau said her 6-year-old son was terrified during the journey.

"He was shaking and crying that he wanted his mother," Budreau said.

The woman driver also allegedly began cursing and shouting at children aboard the bus, according to the WKMG-TV report.

"We kept on telling her that she kept missing everybody's stop and she just started screaming at us," student Lexis Simpson said. "It is not the best day of school I've ever had."

Parents were also nervous when their children did not show up after school.

"You're scared," parent Diane Simpson said. "You don't know where your kid is. You don't know what is wrong"

A district representative said it was a new route for the driver and that they plan to have a second driver on board the bus Tuesday to make certain everything goes smoothly.

Meanwhile, the district is looking into the allegations that the driver was swearing at the students.
