Man Arrested For Feeding Homeless Scheduled For Trial

UPDATED: 5:00 pm EDT June 7, 2007

A Central Florida man arrested for feeding the homeless in Orlando is scheduled to go on trail later this month for violating the controversial ordinance.

Eric Montanez, 21, was recently charged with illegally feeding the homeless under the ordinance that bars feeding groups of people in parks without a special permit, Local 6 News reported.

Montanez is the first person arrested under the ordinance.

"What I did was not wrong," Montanez said. "Just because you make a law that says feeding people is a crime doesn't make it a crime, and we are going to be fighting that to the end."

Montanez said he plans to continue to feed homeless groups every Wednesday at Lake Eola in Orlando, despite the ordinance.

Those who support the ordinance said that feeding the homeless in city parks leads to a spike in crimes, Local 6's reported.

His trial is set for June 25.
