School officials placed a Jackson Middle School teacher on paid administrative leave on Tuesday after she was found in a van with a 16-year-old student.

Janet Lea Hughes, 32, of Viera, was arrested Monday night after two undercover Titusville police officers found her with a student in a van parked at First Presbyterian Church.

Hughes was issued a $35,000 bond on one count of unlawful sexual activity with a minor when she made her initial appearance Tuesday afternoon. On a second count of attempted sexual activity with a minor, Judge Judy Atkin ordered Hughes to community supervision and to have no contact with the boy.

Hughes had not been released from jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

The officers were meeting at the church, located at Park Avenue and Golf View Drive, at about 5 p.m. on Monday to talk about an unrelated case when they saw the van, Titusville police spokesman Sgt. Todd Hutchinson told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The officer who approached the van saw the two lying on a blanket, Hutchinson said.

Police said the two told police they had had sex on a previous occasion.

Hughes was charged with one count of unlawful sexual acts with a minor and one count of attempted unlawful sexual acts with a minor.

Jackson Middle School's Web site lists Hughes as a business teacher. She had been teaching with Brevard Schools since March 2006, schools spokesman Wes Sumner said.

Hughes had no previous infractions with the district, Sumner said. She was a sponsor of the middle school's Future Business Leaders of America and the Future Problem Solvers.

School officials will meet with parents at the school Tuesday night to address any concerns.
