PALM BAY, Fla. -- It happened again, this time less than half a mile from a four-car crash that killed a 47-year-old woman and a short walk from where a 75-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a car last week. It happened again, one day before saturation patrols were scheduled to stop the vehicular carnage. On Sunday, 24-year-old Yeferson A. Grueso Sanchez became the fifth person to die in traffic on Palm Bay Road in less than two weeks.
Starting Monday, Palm Bay police plan to assign eight traffic officers along the 5-mile road -- lined with coffee shops, shopping strips and apartment complexes -- in a zero-tolerance enforcement operation, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "If you're speeding or changing lanes without putting on your signal, you're going to be pulled over," said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department. The plan to increase patrols took on added urgency Sunday after the latest fatal accident happened near a patch of memorial flowers and balloons left for the Palm Bay woman, 75, killed Thursday night. About 12:40 a.m., Sanchez was riding his motorcycle at more than 100 mph on the darkened road, where the speed limit is 45 mph. His bike slammed into the back of a Toyota Corolla and burst into flames, officials said. He was the 16th person to die in a motorcycle accident in Brevard County this year. The impact ripped the back bumper from the Corolla, officials said. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Kirk Dawson of Palm Bay, fled the scene but was tracked down using his license plate, which also fell off at the scene, police said. Police charged Dawson with leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license. He was expected to be handed over to immigration authorities after admitting he had a lapsed Jamaican visa, officials said. Thousands of motorists use the two-lane roadway -- which intersects Interstate 95, Babcock Street, Minton and Dairy roads -- to get to work, school and home. Most drivers say everyone, from commuters to holiday shoppers, simply needs to pay more attention. "It's terrible," said 40-year-old Jim Hasselberger of Melbourne. "I don't think there's anything that can be done. They don't have any room to widen lanes. People should quit running red lights and speeding." The latest string of deadly accidents began with the Nov. 30 crash that killed Michelle Jean Mallory of Palm Bay. That accident also involved high speed, according to Palm Bay police. The driver of the 1999 Ford Taurus police said plowed into the rear of Mallory's Ford Escort remains in fair condition at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. That day, a 34-year-old woman critically injured in a Nov. 28 accident farther east on Palm Bay Road, also died. And Wednesday night, police said Anna Melendez, of Palm Bay, was attempting to cross Palm Bay Road at Riviera Drive with a walker when she was fatally struck by a car. The next morning, 83-year-old Marian Bridges of Palm Bay died as a result of injuries from an unrelated accident at Palm Bay Road and Port Malabar Boulevard, police said.
