Motorcycle passenger killed, driver seriously injured in DeLand crash

Crash happened in area of SR-11, North Spring Garden Avenue

DELAND, Fla. – A motorcycle passenger was killed in a crash in DeLand in Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened in the area of State Road 11 and Spring Garden Avenue around 6:11 p.m., troopers said.

According to a crash report, a Subaru Forester, being driven by a 78-year-old Ormond Beach man, was traveling east on Spring Garden Avenue, approaching State Road 11. At the same time, a Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on State Road 11, approaching Spring Garden Avenue.

Troopers said the driver of the Subaru made a left turn to travel north on State Road 11 and failed to yield from a stop sign.

As a result, the Subaru came into the direct path of the motorcycle and the front of the Harley Davidson collided with the left front of the SUV.

Troopers said the motorcycle driver – identified as a 39-year-old Palm Coast man – was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The passenger – identified as a 39-year-old woman from Palm Coast – was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Subaru and his passenger, a 75-year-old woman from Ormond Beach, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
