56-year-old motorcyclist killed in 2-vehicle crash in Lake County

Crash happened on CR-452 and Sandpiper Drive in Leesburg

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Lake County on Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the deadly crash happened on County Road 452 and Sandpiper Drive in Leesburg around 11:51 a.m.

According to a crash report, a Hyundai Sonata, – being driven by a 91-year-old Apopka man – was driving eastbound on County Road 452, approaching Sandpiper Drive in the inside left turn lane.

At the same time, a Kawasaki motorcycle – being driven by a 56-year-old Umatilla man – was traveling westbound on County Road 452, approaching Sandpiper Drive.

According to the report, the driver of the Sonata made a left turn into the direct path of the motorcycle, causing the front of the Kawasaki to crash into the side of the sedan.

Troopers said the motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Sonata’s driver and the passenger were not injured and remained at the scene, according to the FHP.

The crash remains under investigation.
